BJP Renames Puri Jagannath Temple Security Unit to SSMSV, Overhauls Recruitment | Bhubaneswar News

Bhubaneswar: The BJP govt has given a new name to the proposed security unit for Puri Jagannath Temple and modified the earlier recruitment regulations. The Special Security Battalion (SSB), which was earlier announced by former chief minister Naveen Patnaik for temple protection, will now be called Swatantra Shree Mandir Surakshya Vahini (SSMSV).
CM Mohan Majhi recently informed the assembly that at least 21 schemes and projects of the previous BJD govt have been renamed by the BJP govt after it assumed office. While Naveen announced the creation of 1,083 new posts across various ranks through direct recruitment for SSB, the current administration has opted for source police personnel from existing police divisions of the state and central paramilitary forces instead of any fresh appointments.
“There shall be no direct recruitment to SSMSV. Police personnel shall be posted on a deployment tenure basis from the armed force wing, civil police and other establishments. They can also be brought on temporary deputation from central paramilitary forces and other state police forces,” read a home department order, accessed by TOI.
The initial tenure of all personnel brought on deployment or deputation shall be for three years, which may be extended by one more year, the order read. On completion of their tenures, they shall be replaced by a new group of young personnel. The DGP has been asked to finalise the uniform and logo of SSMSV.
“The primary focus of SSMSV is to provide foolproof and all-round security to Shree Jagannath Temple, Shree Gundicha Temple, Parikrama Prakalpa, Mausi Maa Temple, Badadanda, Shree Marg and other sensitive places in and around the temple. They will be trained to neutralise any threat to the Shree Jagannath Temple,” the order stated.
The SSMSV will liaise with the National Security Guard in conducting regular drills to counter any armed attack or sabotage. They will deal with all kinds of crises, contingencies and unanticipated situations arising out of terrorism, extremism and hostage situations, targeting Jagannath Temple.
