BJP netas huddle to discuss new state chief, key appts | Bhubaneswar News

Bhubaneswar: Senior BJP members convened a crucial closed-door meeting at deputy chief minister Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo‘s residence here on Wednesday to deliberate on the selection of the next state party president and appointments to approximately 100 boards, councils and corporations.
The high-level meeting was attended by CM Mohan Charan Majhi, incumbent state BJP president Manmohan Samal, BJP national general secretary and Odisha in-charge Vijay Pal Singh Tomar, and national general secretary Tarun Chugh, among others.
Responding to media queries, both Tomar and Chugh confirmed that the selection process for the new state president is underway. “Odisha will get its next BJP president very soon,” Chugh said.
Political observers said that speculation has been mounting about Samal potentially securing a full three-year term, especially since he has not even completed two years after he took over in March 2023. However, the delay is being interpreted as the party weighing other options. Samal told reporters that the meeting focused on organisational matters and strategies to enhance governance across the state.
Besides the crucial post of state BJP chief, the party, which came to power in Odisha for the first time on its own eight months ago, has close to 100 posts where the Majhi govt can make political appointments. These include the deputy chairperson of the state planning board, chairpersons of district planning committees in all 30 districts, special development councils in tribal-dominated districts, the Western Odisha Development Council, and in the proposed North Odisha and South Odisha development councils, among others. This apart, the govt will appoint chairpersons and members of the women’s commission, state commission for persons with disabilities, and various corporations.
BJP is set to announce the new appointments after a multi-level approval process, party sources said. Names of potential candidates, already vetted by senior party functionaries, will be presented to a core committee for further consideration.
According to sources familiar with the matter, the final list cleared by the core committee will be sent for govt approval before any official announcements are made. BJP is reportedly looking to reward those who played crucial roles in previous electoral victories and members who show promise for upcoming elections.
Additionally, the BJP plans to accommodate several retired bureaucrats who have shown allegiance to the party, the sources said. The move is being seen as a part of the party’s broader strategy to strengthen its administrative expertise.
