BJP clips Naik wings, appoints Rajesh Patil its Navi Mumbai chief

Navi Mumbai: The BJP has appointed Rajesh Patil its Navi Mumbai president, an indication of Ganesh Naik’s declining influence over local party affairs at a tune when municipal elections are due. The selection of Patil, a close associate of Belapur MLA Manda Mhatre, while keeping Naik’s son away from the party shows BJP’s calculated approach in managing political dynamics.During Patil’s courtesy visit, Naik provided counsel, emphasising the substantial responsibility of enhancing the party’s position. Former city mayor Sagar Naik, the nephew of Ganesh Naik, was also considered for the position.Mhatre expressed satisfaction, stating, “I am happy that Patil got his due being an educated party functionary and his experience speaks volumes of organising skill.”Sources close to Naik suggest the party might have consulted the minister regarding the appointment. Despite his elevation as minister following the Mahayuti alliance’s victory to counter Eknath Shinde’s influence in Thane district, Naik’s current standing is much reduced compared to his NCP tenure where he enjoyed a free hand.Sandeep Naik’s appointment as Navi Mumbai BJP president in July 2023, succeeding Ramchandra Gharat, was short-lived. The party’s preference for Mhatre in Belapur for the 2024 assembly election, while nominating only Ganesh Naik from Airoli, led Sandeep to join NCP (SP) with 25 former corporators. Their subsequent expulsion from BJP resulted in Gharat’s reinstatement. After Sandeep’s electoral defeat, the suspended former corporators were reinstated, but he remained excluded. Party sources indicate the leadership’s unwillingness to accept him back, despite speculation about future reinstatement. Mhatre successfully secured Patil’s appointment and positions for her supporters.Patil’s appointment is crucial for forthcoming civic election. The Shiv Sena-BJP alliance confronts difficulties in Navi Mumbai, with Shinde’s supporters opposing Ganesh Naik. Patil, an uncontroversial project-affected persons (PAP) leader, has gained Shiv Sena’s backing. Patil said, “I enjoy the blessings of both Mhatre and Naik.”
