BJP-BJD Blame Game: Pre-poll violence erupts in Bhadrak district ahead of June 1 elections | Bhubaneswar News

Bhubaneswar: Pre-poll violence erupted in Bhadrak district ahead of June 1 elections with Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) state president Abhilash Panda and secretary Subrat Kumar Biswal suffering serious head injuries after being allegedly assaulted by BJD workers in Bhadrak district on Thursday. BJD refuted the charges.
“Our BJYM president and secretary along with their supporters were returning from Chandabali assembly constituency after conclusion of campaigning on Thursday.Several BJD workers waylaid them, damaged their vehicles and smashed the heads of Panda and Biswal,” BJP state president Manmohan Samal told media persons.
Samal alleged that the attack was engineered by BJD leader VK Pandian, who along with chief minister Naveen Patnaik, campaigned in Chandabali on Thursday.
While several BJP members staged a demonstration in Bhadrak in protest against the assault on the party’s youth wing leaders, a delegation of the party submitted a memorandum at the chief electoral office. Panda and Biswal were admitted to a hospital in Bhadrak and were administered multiple stitches on their heads.
“BJYM president Panda and his supporters were found distributing money in Chandabali. Panda does not belong to Chandabali constituency. Still, he and his supporters violated the 48-hour silence period ahead of the elections and remained in the constituency. When some BJD leaders asked them, Panda hurled abuses. He and his supporters attacked BJD leaders,” read the BJD memorandum.
According to ADG (law and order) Sanjay Kumar, three men involved in the attack were arrested. Police are keeping a close watch.
