BJD: Govt trying to divert attention from cop volunteer’s murder; BJP hits back | Bhubaneswar News

Bhubaneswar: BJD on Friday attacked BJP over the brutal murder of Sahadeb Nayak (36), a police ‘mitra’ (volunteer), stating the govt is trying to divert people’s attention from the case.
Demanding a fair probe into the incident, BJD said it will continue the fight until justice is delivered to Sahadeb’s family. “Instead of focusing on delivering justice to the family, attempts are being made to divert the attention,” alleged BJD’s Bhubaneswar-Central MLA, Ananta Narayan Jena.
Jena said there is a need to find out the motive for murder. “There is also a need to review the law and order situation of Bhubaneswar. Such a heinous murder took place when VVIPs are coming to the city, which is a cause of concern,” he said.
He said in the past seven months, 11 murders took place in Bhubaneswar alone. “It is time to ensure safety of people. They are in constant fear. Instead of being sensitive to such issues, govt should not divert our attention,” Jena said.
Dismissing the allegation, BJP’s Bhubaneswar-Ekamra MLA, Babu Singh, said the govt is constantly monitoring the law and order situation and is in touch with family members of Sahadeb to extend all possible support.
“The chief minister is deeply concerned about the incident and has personally instructed me to stay in touch with Sahadeb’s family. Govt will also provide livelihood option to his family since we know Sahadeb was the only earning member,” he said.
He said the CM has already confirmed that he will be meeting the family members of Sahadeb after the conclusion of the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas. “The culprits were apprehended within 12 hours, which reflects the efficiency of our police,” Singh said.
Accusing BJD of playing politics over the issue, Singh said the BJP govt is committed to delivering justice and the opposition party should not try to provoke people just to get their sympathy.
A group of sanitation workers on Friday also gheraoed the headquarters of Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) demanding a CBI probe into Sahadeb’s murder case. Sahadeb was the leader of sanitation workers engaged by BMC.
