Bhubaneswar: The state assembly on Wednesday witnessed chaos as opposition BJD MLAs demanded an administrative inquiry into the hooch tragedy that claimed two lives in Ganjam district’s Chikiti area.
The BJD legislators rushed to the well, insisting on an investigation by the revenue divisional commissioner, just as the house reconvened for question hour.At the same time, Congress MLAs also entered the well, voicing their worries about the weakening of SC and ST reservations. The commotion compelled speaker Surama Padhy to suspend the proceedings until 4 pm.
Speaking to media persons outside the assembly, opposition chief whip and BJD MLA Pramila Mallik expressed concern that people were losing their lives due to the consumption of spurious liquor. She pointed out that this was happening despite BJP’s manifesto promise of “Nisha Mukt Odisha” (intoxication-free Odisha).
BJD has decided to send a fact-finding team, led by its MLA and former minister Niranjan Pujari to the affected area, senior BJD leader Pratap Jena said.
BJP MLA Manoranjan Dyan Samantara, who represents Chikiti in assembly, said, “The BJP govt is committed to ensuring a fair investigation.”
