Quota to women in Bihar exemplary step: Speaker

Patna: Addressing the plenary session of the 67th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference at Sydney in Australia, assembly Speaker Nand Kishore Yadav on Friday said the Bihar govt has taken exemplary steps by providing 50% reservation to women in the state’s panchayati raj institutions (PRIs) and local govt bodies.
The theme of the session was ‘Benchmarking, standards and guidelines: strengthening parliamentary institutions by adopting best practices.’
“I come from Bihar, where reserving 50% in the PRIs and urban local body govts in Bihar has been a transformative step, and it has set a new benchmark,” Yadav said.
In a similar vein, he said that the Women’s Reservation Act, 2023, has been enacted by Indian Parliament, which has provided quota of 33% in the Lok Sabha and legislative assembly seats for women. “By adopting best practices, we ensure that our Parliament is transparent and also shows its accountability and responsibility to people,” he also said.
