Bhubaneswar: Police here on Friday arrested a Bihar native for alleged rape of a girl, physical intimidation and sending her objectionable photos to her relatives after she refused to marry him.
According to the police, Samir Mansoor (32), who stays in Kashmir, came in contact with the girl, a resident of Jagatsinghpur district, through an online game in 2022 and lured her into a relationship with misleading information.
He apparently told her that his name was Samir but subsequently, when the girl came to know of his last name, she started avoiding him. But it was easier said than done.
“They met in Puri several times and Samir used images of their intimate moments to try and blackmail her into marrying him. He wanted to take the girl to Kashmir,” said a police officer.
The girl, whose age the police did not disclose, looked for ways to avoid him after he threatened to leak her objectionable photos online, after having sent some images to her relatives. She got in touch with a lawyer who helped her lodge a complaint with the police around a month back.
“On the basis of her complaint at Mahila police station, we registered a case against the man under various sections of BNS for rape, extortion and intimidation. Our investigation in the case is underway,” DCP Pinak Mishra said.
As police kept watch on Samir’s whereabouts, the girl continued her interaction with him so that he wouldn’t become suspicious. “She asked him to come to Bhubaneswar, where police had laid a trap to nab him. He was caught once he landed in the city,” the officer added.
The advocate, who helped the girl, said she had no inkling about the man’s intention, although initially, she thought she was in love with him.
Talking to the media, the girl said, “No other girl should go through such betrayal and nightmarish ordeal as I had gone through. I have come to the police to seek justice so that others also learn how not to be entrapped by such people.”
Police said they are verifying if Mansoor has Samir as his first name in all his legal documents. Also, it is being checked how he managed to access the girl’s mobile number and send objectionable photos to her relatives.
