Bihar Agricultural University Students Innovate Saffron Cultivation with Vertical Farming | Patna News – Times of India

Three BAU pupils grow ‘kesar’ with vertical farming method

Bhagalpur: Three Bihar Agricultural University (BAU) students, aiming to become ‘saffron entrepreneurs’ and cultivate one of the precious spices commercially, has brought a new revolution in ‘kesar’ cultivation by growing it in Bhagalpur using controlled environments and modern technologies.
Saffron is grown in India primarily in the Jammu and Kashmir region, but the students with the assistance of researchers and scientists at BAU, Bhagalpur, have successfully cultivated it through aeroponics and vertical farming method. The endeavour has been named ‘From Kashmir to Sabour (Bhagalpur); A Learning Journey’.
Groomed by BAU vice chancellor D R Singh and scientists, the three students — Praphull Kumar Singh, Neeraj Sahu and Raushan Kumar — under the guidance of Anil Kumar Singh (director of research, BAU), Sailbala Dei (deputy director research) and Nitu Kumari (assistant professor, agricultural economics), besides the support from Sabour Agri Incubators, have been able to cultivate the saffron, also known as ‘red gold’, at Bhagalpur and plans to turn this into entrepreneurship venture.
