Bhubaneswar’s New Infrastructure Projects Aim to Alleviate Traffic Congestion |

Bhubaneswar: In a bid to address traffic congestion concerns, state govt on Tuesday decided to undertake road infrastructure development in the capital city, focusing on new roads and flyovers.
To reduce congestion, a ring road between Jatni-Bhubaneswar and Cuttack-Bhubaneswar will be constructed. Officials said the proposed roads will ease travelling on city roads, avoiding the rush on national highways.
Chief minister Mohan Majhi on Tuesday emphasised the need to improve vehicle movement and traffic management in the city due to its growing population. To address traffic issues, officials of the public works and housing and urban development departments presented various road project plans for the city to the CM.
Proposed roads and flyovers include a new road from Jayadev Vihar to Nandankanan, a ring road from Patia Station Square to NH-16 over the Daya West canal, improvement of Sundarpada-Jatni road, a new road from the Institute of Mathematics on the Pitapalli-Trisulia road to Ekamra Kanan, besides a flyover from Kalpana Square to Museum-Rabi Talkies. A second road overbridge between Sishu Bhavan and Mausima, and the construction of a ring road from Tamando-Chandaka-Barang-Dhauli back to Tamando will also be developed.
Additionally, the urban development department presented detailed information on the formation of the Bhubaneswar-Cuttack-Puri Economic Region and greater Bhubaneswar. “The infrastructure development push will significantly reduce travel time and ease traffic bottlenecks that have been plaguing our city,” said Binay Panigrahi, a resident.
The ring road is essential to ease traffic along the Jayadev Vihar-Patia stretch, an important and busy artery which is mostly used by people to shuttle between Bhubaneswar and Cuttack. This is the lone road from Jayadev Vihar to Patia and KIIT Square that caters to residents. Along this road, several hotels, corporate offices, big residential complexes, Nandankanan Zoo and KIIT University are located. The flyover at Kalpana Square will help in two ways. It will directly direct the Puri-bound vehicles onto Puri road, while the service roads on either side will be meant for city commuters, officials said.
The project will create minimum disruption to existing traffic during construction. “We have developed detailed traffic management plans for the construction phase, and work will be carried out primarily during night,” an officer said.
