Bhubaneswar Police to Extern Criminals Ahead of Dussehra and Diwali Celebrations |

Bhubaneswar: Ahead of the upcoming Dussehra and Diwali celebrations, the commissionerate police have decided to banish history-sheeters from the city limits to ensure a secure environment for the festivities.
According to police commissioner Sanjeeb Panda, section 45 of the Odisha Urban Police (OUP) Act will be invoked to banish notorious criminals from Bhubaneswar.“We will issue ‘tadipar’ orders against hardened criminals likely to disturb the peace and tranquillity in Bhubaneswar during Durga Puja and other major festivals. A list of such criminals is being prepared,” Panda said after chairing a meeting with officers of police stations and zonal assistant commissioners of police (ACP)s on Thursday.
Under the OUP Act, the commissioner of police is empowered to exercise externment rules that banish criminals from a geographical area for a specific period (between six months and one year) to prevent criminal activities. Sources said that violators spotted in the city will face criminal proceedings and may be arrested on non-bailable warrants.
Deputy commissioner of Police (DCP) Prateek Singh said that a database of notorious criminals, including extortionists, robbers, property offenders, and drug traffickers, is being compiled to enforce the externment orders. “Our goal is to maintain law and order. Criminals disturbing peace and spreading terror will be dealt with firmly,” Singh said.
