City cops arrest 2 serial chain snatchers during crackdown

Bhubaneswar: Capital police on Sunday arrested two wanted chain snatchers during their ongoing drive to nab criminals in the city. On Saturday, 11 people were arrested on charges of drug peddling, snatching, robbery and burglary.
The two wanted burglars have been identified as Prafulla Naik (22), a native of Nayagarh district, who resides in Tarini Basti here, and Deepak Pradhan (25), a native of Puri district, who resides at Shantipalli Basti.
Police said the duo was involved in several cases of chain snatching. Details are being ascertained as to how many people have fallen prey to them. They would manage to escape after every snatching, but their role came under scrutiny when police received a complaint regarding a snatching incident near Saraswati Sishu Mandir School, close to the indoor stadium. Prafulla and one Sk Firoz had snatched a chain from a woman leading to a police investigation.
“We first caught hold of Firoz, but Prafulla managed to escape. Firoz was arrested and remanded in judicial custody. We got information that Deepak was in possession of the chain that was snatched from the woman. While tracking Deepak, we nabbed Prafulla as well,” said DCP Pinak Mishra.
Police said during interrogation, Prafulla confessed to committing several chain snatchings. Deepak was involved in three chain snatching cases. Police have recovered three mobile phones and one gold chain from them.
The DCP said the police’s safe city drive will continue till all chain snatchers and mischief mongers are identified and booked.
