58 kiosks, canopies given to vendors in city

Bhubaneswar: Rehabilitation of street vendors, who were evicted for different development projects, continues in the city with Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) distributing 58 more kiosks and canopies to beneficiaries in Ghatikia area Monday.
“Under the direction of commissioner Rajesh Prabhakar Patil, 38 out of 40 canopies were distributed in ward no. 23. Two kiosks had been previously allocated, and the remaining 20 were distributed through the lottery today,” the BMC said.
The distribution of kiosks and canopies followed govt regulations, providing space for people from general, women, and physically-disabled categories. The location of each shop was also identified.
Mayor Sulochana Das advised the beneficiaries to sign agreements and open their shops at the earliest. “All beneficiaries will open their shops, and everyone was advised to keep the vending zone clean and orderly. It was also emphasised that no kiosks or canopies can be rented out,” she said.
So far, over 2,000 kiosks were distributed to the beneficiaries under the street vendor rehabilitation scheme. BMC sources said more such kiosks are under various stages of construction and will be allocated to vendors.
