Bhakta Das: Bhakta Das resigns as head of Congress campaign committee | Bhubaneswar News

Bhubaneswar: Senior Congress leader and former Union minister Bhakta Charan Das on Monday tendered his resignation as head of the party’s campaign committee, owning moral responsibility for the party’s dismal showing in the recent elections.
“I worked hard to contribute my best, but unfortunately, we failed to meet the expectations. I take moral responsibility for the failure to get the expected number of seats, both in assembly and Lok Sabha elections in Odisha,” Das’s letter, addressed to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, read.
The Congress party’s performance in Odisha showed a modest improvement in the assembly elections, increasing its tally from 9 seats in 2019 to 14 in the recent polls. However, the party’s vote share decreased from 17% in 2019 to 13.26% this time. In the Lok Sabha election, the Congress managed to retain the Koraput seat it had won in 2019.
Ahead of the elections, the Congress had set a daunting task of improving its tally in the 147-member assembly to 90 seats. Das was on March 22 tasked to lead the campaign committee. In 2019 too, he was assigned to look after the party’s campaign.
“We failed to launch massive campaigns this time. We managed to arrange only two election rallies of Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge. Our campaign strategy should have been more aggressive. As chairman of the campaign committee, the onus of failure lies on me and my post,” Das told TOI. Asked about the relevance of his post (chairman of the committee) after the end of the election, Das said it was a permanent post handed to him by the All India Congress Committee.
