Berhampur Police Conducts Last Rites for Abandoned Infant | Bhubaneswar News

Berhampur: Berhampur police, in collaboration with Berhampur Municipal Corporation (BeMC), conducted the last rites of a 17-day-old infant whose parents declined to claim the body six days after its death.
The baby boy, born on Nov 1 to a woman from Gochhapada, Kandhamal district, was admitted to the ICU of MKCG Medical College and Hospital, Berhampur, immediately after birth due to health complications. The infant succumbed to illness on Nov 10 during treatment.
Following the death, the parents returned to their hometown without informing hospital authorities. The medical college filed a complaint at Baidyanathpur police station and preserved the body for the parents’ to claim it.
When the parents couldn’t be reached, Berhampur police coordinated with Gochhapada police to contact them. The parents, citing financial constraints, formally declined to claim the body through a written statement at Gochhapada police station.
“After the parents’ refusal, our staff, along with BeMC sanitary workers, performed the burial at a cremation ground following all necessary procedures,” confirmed Berhampur SP Saravana Vivek M on Monday.
The incident highlights the challenging circumstances faced by economically disadvantaged families in managing end-of-life situations. The coordinated effort by police, municipal corporation, and healthcare authorities ensured a dignified disposal of the infant’s remains despite the unfortunate circumstances.
