Boy’s death: BeMC notice to asst engr

Berhampur: Berhampur Municipal Corporation (BeMC) has issued a show-cause notice to the assistant engineer concerned in Ward Number 2 following the death of an 11-year-old boy who fell into an open drain and got washed away amid heavy rain at Laxmi Nursingh Street on Augt 21.
The victim, P Sai Kumar, was washed away in the open drain when he was going back home on his bicycle.He was rescued from the drain after about four hours of search and taken to MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur where he was declared dead.
In the show-cause notice issued on Wednesday to Mithilesh Ranjan Rath (assistant engineer), BeMC commissioner B P Mishra said, “The progress of work relating to covering of all open drains and placing adequate barricade along with signage to prevent any danger to public life or property in the Ward Number 2 has been delayed, despite the administration approving these tasks on June 28, much before the onset of heavy rain. Your prompt action could have resulted in avoiding the boy’s death on Aug 21 in the aftermath of heavy rain and saved the BeMC from embarrassment,”
The commissioner directed Rath to submit his reply to the show-cause notice explaining why disciplinary action would not be initiated against him for negligence.
