This World Poetry Day, Bangalore Times explores how Bengaluru’s dynamic atmosphere and social media’s reach are shaping modern poetry. We speak to poets across mediums – spoken word, digital verse, and traditional written forms – who affirm that Bengaluru is the perfect stage for today’s poet. The poets we spoke to also emphasised the evolving nature of poetry and accessibility of the art form in the modern world. Excerpts:
Poetry is evolving, & it is here to stay: Ruby
‘Poetry is one of the means to ex press our cultural experiences and to find significance in our existence. Over centuries, you will find records of such poetic expressions – from cavemen’s paintings to William Shakespeare’s plays, from lyri al verses of devotion to two-liners on Instagram – and it is evolving while retaining its core significance,” said Ruby Naaz, a creative consultant who writes poetry on typewriter for park-goers every weekend in Cubbon Park.
Poetry brings people together: Nitin
Poet Nitin emphasises poetry’s ability to bring people together and be one’s best self. “For me, poetry is all about celebrating words, emotions, and storytelling. Every day, I keep poetry alive by writing, reading, and creating open mic spaces where people can share their voices. In Bengaluru, you have a community where poets are supported through open mics, workshops, and collaborations. Poetry has a knack for bringing people together.”
Social media often overshadows the depth of poetry: Henry
As much as poetry is thriving in physical spaces, it has also found a place in the digital world. Social media has made it easier for poets to share their work with a global audience. Henry El-Muthana notes, “Social media has democratised poetry. Online platforms enable us to share our collective work instantly, reaching a global audience. However, the ephemeral nature of online content can sometimes overshadow the depth and contemplation that poetry invites.”
Open mics are where poetry comes alive: Anushka
Anushka, a poet who actively participates in Bengaluru’s vibrant open mic scene, shares, “Poetry isn’t just something I do; it’s how I experience the world. Whether scribbling in a notebook, absorbing emotions from conversations, or witnessing profound moments, poetry finds its way into my daily life. One of the most meaningful ways I celebrate poetry is by creating and participating in its spaces where voices can be heard.”
