Bengaluru Idli Adulteration: 54 idli samples adulterated with cancer-causing plastic in this city |

Idli, often considered as a comforting breakfast, is now not safe anymore. Wondering why? Well as per latest tests conducted by the state food safety and standards department in Bengaluru, there are idli samples that are unsafe or substandard for consumption due to the use of plastic sheets during steaming.
As per a leading news website, a recent drive by the food safety department in Bengaluru, 251 idli samples were collected in the city, of which 54 were found unsafe for consumption. The issue was traced to shops using plastic sheets while steaming idlis, which contaminates the food and introduces carcinogenic (cancer-causing) substances.
As per experts, use of plastic in food preparation is a dangerous health hazard and can lead to major health issues.

Side effects of using plastic in making idli
Use of plastic sheets for steaming idlis can lead to leakage of toxic chemicals in the food. Many plastic sheets contain chemicals like bisphenol A (BPA), phthalates, and other endocrine-disrupting chemicals, which can leach into food when heated. Some plastics also release dioxins and microplastics that may accumulate in the body over time, increasing the risk of cancer.

As per experts, when plastic is exposed to heat, it can degrade and release toxic compounds, especially if it is not food-grade or heat-resistant. These chemicals produced are linked to hormonal imbalances, metabolic disorders, and an increased risk of cancers, particularly breast and prostate cancer.
