NEW DELHI: The yellow alert issued on May 18 to some regions in Karnataka, including Bengaluru, remains valid for Monday and Tuesday as well, said IMD Bengaluru centre Director N Puviarasu.He said the department is studying the current pattern of the air circulation and will later issue a weather update.The financial capital has been experiencing pre-monsoon showers, with IMD maintaining a yellow alert until May 22, except for today.The IMD has issued alerts for moderate rain and thundershowers in Mumbai and Palghar districts of Maharashtra, whilst Thane and Raigad have been warned of lightning, thunderstorms and moderate rainfall.The forecast for Mumbai and Palghar includes thunderstorms with lightning, light to moderate rainfall, and gusty winds (40-50 kmph) at isolated locations over the next four days.Several Maharashtra locations, including Kolhapur, Satara, Pune, Ahilyanagar, and Nasik, are likely to experience thunderstorms with lightning and heavy rain, with winds gusting to 50-60 kilometres per hour today.According to the Regional Meteorological Centre, Mumbai, and Puviarasu’s statement: “As per the current pattern of the cyclonic circulation, Karnataka, especially the coastal parts, will get heavy rainfall. Bengaluru is also expected to receive heavy rainfall for the next two days.”Bengaluru experienced intense rainfall on Sunday, causing severe waterlogging in low-lying areas.The IMD warned that the yellow alert might cause temporary power disruptions, minor traffic issues and possible falling of weak trees and branches.IMD issued a yellow alert on Sunday for heavy rainfall across 23 Karnataka districts, including Bengaluru, effective until Thursday.The alert indicated moderate to heavy thundershowers, lightning, and gusty winds up to 50-60 km/h, with widespread rainfall and thunderstorms expected throughout the week.The alert covers districts including Bengaluru Urban, Bengaluru Rural, Kolar, Chikkaballapura, Tumakuru, Mandya, Mysuru, Hassan, Kodagu, Belagavi, Bidar, Raichur, Yadgir, Davanagere, and Chitradurga.IMD’s morning alert attributes the weather to an upper-air cyclonic circulation over Southeast Bay of Bengal and parts of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, alongside a trough from Telangana to North Tamil Nadu, drawing moisture and intensifying rainfall across southern India.According to an IMD bulletin, Bengaluru city received 103 mm of rain in 24 hours.Sai Layout in Horamavu, Mahadevapura zone, was severely affected with 4-5ft water submergence on Saturday, flooding streets to knee level.Residents have reportedly blamed blocked drains, stating their complaints to authorities went unaddressed.NC Colony on Tannery Road also experienced water entering homes.Whilst no injuries occurred, an uprooted tree in Jayanagar damaged a parked car and jeep, and East End Road towards Mount Carmel School Road was temporarily closed due to a fallen tree.Waterlogged roads across the city caused significant commuting difficulties.Despite traffic police alerts about slow-moving traffic, vehicles were stuck in knee-deep water at locations like Panathur S Cross, upper ramp of Domlur flyover and Koramangala. Traffic near Manyata Tech Park was also affected.Various Karnataka regions, particularly Malenadu and coastal areas, have been receiving substantial rainfall.
