Bengaluru: A doctor has been accused of killing a dog by hurling it down from the terrace of a three-storey building in southeast Bengaluru recently. The four-year-old canine, named Scooby, fell on the windscreen of a car parked on the roadside and died.
A 20-year-old student, Ayush Bhattacharjee, staying in the same building has filed a complaint against the doctor, 31. He said the doctor had also thrown Scooby earlier in Feb this year and the dog had suffered a spinal injury and a leg fracture but recovered.
Adugodi police have taken up the case against the doctor under section 325 (mischief by killing or maiming an animal) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The doctor lives on the third floor where Scooby also stayed with the building’s caretaker.
Residents of the building who heard a loud thud around 2.40am on April 20, found Scooby stuck between the car and a wall of the apartment complex. Ayush alleged that the residents saw the doctor rushing into his home and locking the doors. A few residents went to the doctor’s home and knocked on the door but got no response. A few others took Scooby to a veterinary hospital, where the doctors declared she had died due to head injuries.
The owner of the car whose windshield was shattered and a rear-view mirror damaged due to the dog thrown on it, reported the incident to Wilson Garden police. They inspected the spot and directed the residents to approach jurisdictional Adugodi police. When a head constable from Adugodi police station called the doctor, he allegedly confessed to having thrown the dog in Feb but not this time.
The residents found on the internet that the doctor had been accused of killing a dog in Indore in 2022. The doctor approached the Madhya Pradesh high court which quashed the proceedings against him.
When contacted by TOI, the doctor said the allegations against him are false. He said he did not throw the dog either in Feb or now. “I complained to police about the people blaming me. The police officer mistook me that I had admitted to throwing the dog in Feb as he didn’t understand my Kannada,” he said.
“When people banged the door at 3am, how could I open it? They were abusing me. A bunch of kids behaved immaturely and wrote abusive words on my car and addressed me as a dog killer,” he said.
“The Indore case against me in 2022 was filed because of an issue between me and the building owner over the rent. It was also a false allegation,” the doctor said.
