Bengaluru civic body initiates measures to combat dengue cases

Bengaluru: BBMP chief commissioner Tushar Giri Nath has directed officials to take immediate precautionary measures to control dengue incidence in the city. Addressing a virtual meeting on Thursday, he stressed the need for urgent action as rain has begun in the city.
He ordered strict cleanliness enforcement, including penalties for violators, and called for public awareness campaigns. Giri Nath also instructed zonal coordination among the health, horticulture, forest, solid waste management, major water canals, and road infrastructure departments to identify and prevent waterlogging — a major cause of mosquito breeding.
In areas with a lot of dengue cases, officials must conduct targeted fogging and insecticide spraying. Fever clinics will be set up and fines imposed on those neglecting cleanliness in vacant lots and construction sites. Weekly insecticide spraying is mandatory.
Principal secretary for health Harsha Gupta mandated appointing a nodal officer and eight entomologists per zone. The necessary dengue test kits will be provided.
BBMP special commissioner (health) Suralkar Vikas Kishore said 15,282 dengue cases were reported in Bengaluru in 2024. Last year, fines imposed in connection with mosquito-breeding sites totalled Rs 24 lakh.
