Bhubaneswar: Two women sustained injuries on Sunday after a bear attacked them while they were attending to nature’s call near Kotribahal village in Nuapada district.
The injured women, Jini Bhoe, 45, and Chaumani Ketki, 44, were admitted to the district headquarters hospital. Their condition is reported to be stable. Ajiz Khan, the divisional forest officer (DFO) for the Khariar territorial division, said that there is a provision for a Rs 5,000 compensation for bear attack injuries that result in less than seven days of hospitalisation.
“Bears keep straying into the area where the incident took place since it is close to the sanctuary,” said Ajiz. The DFO added that the bear seems to have retreated back into the forest. “However, we are using drones equipped with thermal cameras to monitor the area for any further bear activity near human settlements,” he added. National Teddy Bear Day is celebrated annually on September 9 to honor the comfort and memories provided by teddy bears. The tradition dates back to President Theodore Roosevelt’s refusal to shoot a bear cub in 1902. Celebrations include donating teddy bears, engaging in DIY activities, and making new ones.
A spectacled bear cub was recently born at a rescue center in northern Peru’s Santa Catalina de Chongoyape community. Park rangers discovered the cub after observing unusual behavior from its mother, Lola. This marks the second birth in six years at the center, which provides a safe habitat for vulnerable species like the spectacled bear and white-winged guan.
