BDA opens 22 aid posts for traffic cops | Bhubaneswar News
Bhubaneswar: In a bid to support traffic police personnel, who often discharge their duty in extreme weather conditions, the Bhubaneswar Development Authority (BDA) on Friday unveiled as many as 22 traffic aid posts near key junctions in the city.
Housing and urban development minister Krushna Chandra Mahapatra inaugurated the first facility at Khandagiri junction, following which the rest of the posts were simultaneously opened for traffic cops at the other locations.
“The initiative marks a significant improvement in the working conditions for traffic cops, who often work in extreme weather conditions. It ensures that our traffic police officers have the necessary facilities to perform their duties effectively,” Mahapatra said.
Strategically placed at major junctions, the 22 trafiic aid posts were constructed at a total cost of Rs 2.6 crore and handed over to the commissionerate police for use.
The posts will serve as a resting place, allowing the personnel to take breaks while their colleagues manage traffic at busy junctions. The posts are equipped with restrooms and drinking water facilities .
BDA had in Aug 2023 initiated the process to develop the traffic aid posts. Work on the project started in April last year. Initially, the BDA plans to construct as many as 47 aid posts, out of which 22 have been completed so far, sources said.
Key junctions where the posts were opened on Friday included Patia Square, Damana Square, KIIT Square, Xavier Square, PMG Square, Jayadev Vihar Square, Acharya Vihar Square, Vani Vihar Square, Rupali Square and Forest Park Square, among others.
Officials said the introduction of the traffic aid posts is a significant step towards improving working conditions for traffic personnel, who often face extreme heat, heavy rain and cold weather while discharging their duties.
Earlier in the day, Mahapatra also laid the foundation stone of a crematorium in Dumduma, a project executed by the BDA. The proposed crematorium will be developed over 1.58 acres of land, with a budget allocation of Rs 4.60 crore.
BDA in an official statement said the facility will include a spacious waiting hall, separate changing rooms for both men and women, an administrative block, a water body, and a state-of-the-art electrical or gas crematorium.
