Bhubaneswar: The Gandhamardhan Surakhya Parishad (GSP) has launched an indefinite protest against alleged mining exploration in the hill range, which spans Balangir, Bargarh and Nuapada districts in western Odisha.
The protest, which began on Monday at the Khaprakhol block office in Balangir district, gained momentum following the recent visit of two geologists from Minerals Exploration and Consultancy Limited (MECL), a Government of India enterprise, to Temrimal village in Bargarh district for a pre-mining graphite survey.
“We will not let anyone exploit our natural resources,” said Rabi Narayan Pradhan, convenor of GSP. “Gandhamardhan hill is a place of historical and regional pride connected to the emotions of the local people. We will revolt against any company that comes for mining exploration.”
Despite repeated attempts, MECL officials could not be reached for comment. However, Bargarh district collector Aditya Goyal said, “We have received the letter. The local tehsildar and concerned officers are conducting an inquiry. Further action will be based on their report.”
According to official documents, the ministry of mines (NMET) and the directorate of mines and geology of Odisha had allocated four square kilometres in Temrimal graphite block to MECL for prospecting. The area spans parts of Bargarh and Balangir districts.
Tribal communities of Temrimal village, who depend on the Gandhamardhan hill for their livelihood and spiritual practices, have joined the protests. They prevented the geologists from conducting tests in the area.
The protesters are demanding that Gandhamardhan hill be designated as a national resource and are opposing land acquisition for mining purposes.
