Bargarh Tragedy: Woman Killed as Truck Crashes into House | Bhubaneswar News
Bhubaneswar: A 61-year-old woman was killed when a container truck crashed into her house late Sunday night in Bargarh district, police said.
The victim, Ambika Tandi, was sleeping when the truck ploughed into her asbestos house at Turunga chowk on NH-53. Two other family members sustained minor injuries in the incident and were later discharged from the district headquarters hospital.
According to police, the container truck was en route from Raipur to Bargarh when the allegedly intoxicated driver lost control of the vehicle. Locals apprehended and assaulted the driver before police arrived at the scene. The driver is currently receiving medical treatment.
“The driver was clearly under the influence of alcohol when the incident occurred. He will be arrested and produced in court after his treatment,” said Bargarh Sadar SDPO Padarabinda Tripathy. “
The accident sparked protests as residents blocked the Bargarh-Sohela Road, demanding compensation and safety measures. The blockade was lifted after authorities assured action and released immediate assistance of Rs 30,000 from the Red Cross fund. Officials have promised an additional compensation of Rs 2 lakh upon submission of the death certificate.
Residents are also demanding protective fencing along the highway and additional street lighting. “Accidents occur here monthly. Our houses are not safe,” said a local resident who wished to remain anonymous. Officials have agreed to approach the National Highway Authority of India regarding the safety concerns.
