Balasore village grieves loss of son in Pahalgam terror attack | Bhubaneswar News

Balasore: The quiet village of Ishani in Balasore district is cloaked in sorrow following the death of Prasant Satpathy in the terror attack in Pahalgam. Known for his vibrant personality and love for travel, Prasant was on a family trip with his wife Priyadarshini and their son Tanuj when tragedy struck, ending his journey — and life — abruptly.
His death has left the entire village shocked. At his ancestral home, relatives, neighbours and officials gathered to express their condolences and share the family’s grief.
For Padmavati Satpathy, Prasant’s mother, the news is still beyond belief. “I spoke to him on Tuesday morning. I just asked if he had eaten breakfast,” she said, her voice barely a whisper. “Who knew that would be the last time I would hear his voice?”
She fainted multiple times upon receiving the news and remains in a fragile emotional state.
Prasant’s elder brother, Sushant, struggled to hold back tears. “We were three brothers. I once suggested we live separately after starting our own families, but Prasant said no. He wanted us to stay united, always. He made a promise… but he couldn’t keep it,” he said, his voice cracking.
Friends and neighbours remember Prasant as a kind-hearted and cheerful person. He worked as an accounts assistant at the Central Institute of Plastics Engineering and Technology (CIPET), Balasore. His wife, Priyadarshini, is employed at the office of the Balasore Child Development Project Officer (CDPO). The couple was known for their warmth and strong family values. “He was very popular in Balasore,” said Rajendra Rout, a close friend. “Always smiling, always willing to help. He loved life and wanted to show his son the world.”
The tragedy has united the community in grief. Locals have rallied around the Satpathy family, offering emotional and logistic support. Politicians, police officers and district officials have visited the bereaved family to offer their condolences.
Dillip Kumar Rath, Prasant’s maternal uncle, voiced both anguish and anger. “This is not just our loss. Innocent lives are being snatched away by terrorism. We demand justice. The govt must act decisively so that such brutality never occurs again.”
Balasore MP Pratap Chandra Sarangi said, “In this time of sorrow, we stand by the Satpathy family. The entire Balasore community is grieving. We pray for the peaceful journey of Prasant’s soul and assure the family of our full support.”
Tehsildar of Balasore Sadar, Ashwini Kumar Nayak confirmed that arrangements are being made for Prasant’s final rites. “A public tribute ceremony will be organised to allow the community to pay their last respects once his mortal remains arrive,” he said.
