Autopsy confirms techie was murdered, husband arrested

Chennai: It was murder and not an accidental fall , said the autopsy of a 23-year-old techie from Manimangalam, a month after she was found dead on May 3. The case of domestic violence and dowry harassment was altered to murder and police arrested Stephy Matilda’s husband, Rajmohan, 26, also a techie. The autopsy report said the head injury and fluid in her lungs were caused by abuse, not an accidental fall.Earlier, Stephy’s family had raised questions about her death citing long-standing abuse and dowry demands. On Thursday, police said besides the autopsy report they had other evidence to show it was murder.Stephy and Rajmohan met when he was a tenant at her family’s house in Varadharajapuram in 2022, during her college years. Despite opposition from both families over caste differences, the couple got married on Feb 19, 2024, in Sivaganga. Stephy’s family said that Rajmohan’s family demanded 100 sovereigns of gold and a car as dowry. They provided 40 sovereigns for Stephy, five sovereigns for Rajmohan, a two-wheeler worth 2 lakh, and several lakhs in cash was transferred both online and in person, police said.Soon after their marriage, Rajmohan and his mother, abused Stephy and repeatedly demanded more money, police added. Stephy told her friends and relatives about the abuse, and they later told the police. On May 3, Rajmohan’s brother called Stephy’s brother, asking him to come to their house. When Stephy’s brother arrived, she was unconscious. Police said Rajmohan initially said she fainted and fell. She was taken to a private hospital in Old Perungalathur, where doctors declared her dead on arrival. Police said that she had injuries on her face and neck, while her face and fingernails was blue.Police say audio recordings recovered later revealed Stephy speaking about being beaten and abused. Rajmohan was remanded in judicial custody. An RDO inquiry is underway to probe dowry-related complaints raised by her family.
