Aul: Battle Between Royal Scion and Daughter of Nemesis in Aul Assembly Seat | Bhubaneswar News

Kendrapada: Pratap Keshari Deb, a minister in the Naveen Patnaik govt, four-time MLA and royal scion, who is seeking re-election from Aul assembly seat in Kendrapada district, is facing a spirited challenge from Congress candidate, 28-year-old physician Debasmita Sharma.
Debasmita is the daugher of former Aul MLA Debendra Sharma who had dealt Deb his only defeat in 2014.Deb had won the elections from Aul, considered the royal family’s fiefdom, in 2000, 2004, 2009 and 2019.
Large numbers of farmers of the riverside villages of Aul, under the banner of Khorosrota Banchao Sangram Samiti (KBSS), have been opposing the Rs 754-crore proposed mega drinking water project to divert water from the river to provide water to other areas or big industries.
“We are opposing the proposed project as the river Khorosrota will run dry after the implementation of the project. Inadequate water flow in the river due to the project will gradually destroy the agriculture and environment of the 220 riverside villages with a population of around four lakh under Aul assembly segment. The govt should first build a barrage to store the water before diverting it from the river in this project,” said Rajendra Dhal of Sialia village.
However Pratap differed and iterated, “We did a series of development works. All the villages are now connected with pucca and concrete roads. Our govt has provided drinking water to almost all the villages. The mega drinking water project will benefit many villages. We also built many bridges in the river-locked Aul and Rajkanika areas.”
“It is a mission for me to help the poor and needy for which I decided to contest from Aul. Majority of political leaders represent the corrupt political system. I will try to clean up the system in a small way in my constituency,” said Debasmita.
BJP candidate Krushna Chandra Panda said, “Both BJD and Congress did nothing for the people of Aul for which voters will vote for me. A double-engine BJP govt at the state and Centre can improve the lives of people of Aul.”
Kendrapada Lok Sabha seat and Aul assembly constituency will vote on June 1.
