Atal Setu Marathon: Mild elevation on Atal Setu no sweat for 6,500 runners | Mumbai News – The Times of India

MUMBAI: For the second year running, Navi Mumbai is set to host a test of endurance as the MMRDA Atal Setu L&T Marathon in association with The Times Of India takes place on Sunday.

The newly developed Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Trans Harbour Link, popularly known as Atal Setu, will see 6,500 individuals running along the scenic course. Although predominantly flat, the course, which has been measured and certified by World Athletics, does have a mild elevation at the centre of the sea bridge. Not that it should trouble runners too much, according to race director P Venkatraman.

Mumbai gears up for sea bridge marathon
“Generally when there’s a mild elevation, it works both ways because many people can take a mild elevation very easily in their stride. But when you’re coming down, you can come faster.

Getting to the route of the matter
“Normally on the way back, you would have got tired and exhausted and you’ll be slower, but here, because of the downward slope, you can actually be a little bit faster. So you are likely to get your personal best because of that,” said Venkatraman, who is also a level II RRCA qualified running coach.
Taking place in four categories — full marathon (42k), half marathon (21k), the 10k and 5k, each race will begin at BPT Road, which is just by Sewri railway station.
As was the case a year ago, there will be two marked-out courses over the sea bridge. The full marathon and the 10k events will unfold along Route A (towards Panvel), while the half marathon and the 5k run will take place on Route B (coming from Panvel). There will be a designated drop-off zone for participants arriving by private vehicles or taxis.
This year’s edition will also feature mist zones, as well as water sprays located at 10 water stations to help runners refresh themselves. Those running the full marathon, meanwhile, will be treated to breakfast and a lounge which will have ice baths situated near the finish line.
A marathon expo will be held on Friday from 11am to 7pm and Saturday from 10am to 5pm at the Times of India Building in Fort, where runners will be provided with the essential running kit, including their bib. At the expo, bibs will be available for charitable causes too. The second edition will see the participation of 28 NGOs.
Beyond being a test of strength and stamina, the marathon reflects Mumbai’s growing passion for running.
