Hyderabad: At Avalon apartments in Mehdipatnam, civic and security personnel staged an attack where several people were injured and trapped on the third and fourth floors of the building. As part of the mock drill, first, a siren went off, subsequently, the volunteers demonstrated how people can be rescued, brought down, and shifted in ambulances for treatment, in case of a real emergency. Officials from the fire, police, GHMC, and health departments, among others, participated in the drill.“It was to check coordination between departments to ensure that loss of life is reduced in case of a disaster,” said Dr N Muralidhar, deputy district medical and health officer, Golconda area. He and his team offered ‘first aid’ to the ‘injured’ and segregated them according to the seriousness of their condition.“We used different colour tags to indicate a person’s condition. While black meant dead, red was emergency, yellow indicated that the person needs medical assistance, and blue meant he/she needs to be shifted to a safe home,” he added.Beforehand, doctors also informed private hospitals nearby to keep beds ready to shift patients, as part of the drill. Residents who participated in the drill said that these are needed to create awareness and also to check preparedness. “As soon as we heard the siren, we became alert. From the third floor, I was carried to the open area on the ground floor and was provided first aid. They put a yellow tag on me for identification,” said Md Zaki Ahmed, a class 7 student, who acted as a patient for the drill.Another resident, Md Anas Dandeli, said that they were instructed not to walk around when the siren was blown, but to stay put in one place and wait for help instead.
