MUMBAI: Mumbai has recorded its second wettest July ever with 1,505.5mm rainfall already received this month. Last year, the city had recorded 1,771mm rainfall in July- the highest yet.

A week left, it's already second wettest July ever

The accumulation of 1,505.5mm rain this month has been aided by multiple days of triple-digit rainfall starting July 7. The highest one-day rainfall recorded for the month was 268mm between July 7 and 8.
After June’s rainfall fell short of the typical average, recording only 347mm against an expected 537.1mm, all hopes were pinned on July. This month has already surpassed its average monthly rainfall of 855mm and, on Wednesday, also crossed the 1,505.5mm mark, the highest recorded after last July’s 1,771mm.
“Rainfall, especially in the suburbs, is very likely to continue while south Mumbai may see less intense activity. As winds have picked up speed, they will push the rain-bearing clouds towards the interiors, which is also a good sign as the catchment area lakes are located far from city limits,” said Abhijit Modak, an independent forecaster.
India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an upgraded orange alert for Mumbai; on Tuesday, it had issued a yellow alert for Mumbai for Wednesday.
A red alert was issued for Palghar and Raigad.
Meanwhile, water stocks in the seven lakes that supply to Mumbai rose to 58% of their total capacity or 8.4 lakh million litre.
Last year, on the same date, water stocks stood at 7.6 million litre or 53%.
In more good news, Tansa became the second lake supplying water to Mumbai to overflow at 4.16pm. Tulsi lake was the first to overflow this month on July 20.
Tansa has a live storage capacity of 1.45 lakh million litre of water and supplies 455 million litre to the city per day, making it the third highest water-supplying lake for the city. Last year, Tansa lake began to overflow on July 26 at 4.35am.
Meanwhile, a 10% water cut is still in force in Mumbai.
