Bhubaneswar: Vigilance sleuths on Wednesday arrested a govt engineer here on charges of accepting a bribe of Rs 1 lakh from a contractor to process his outstanding bills of Rs 7 lakh.
The accused was identified as Naresh Kumar Das (59), an assistant engineer in the rural works (public health) division of Bhubaneswar.
“During a search of his office after his arrest while accepting the bribe money, our officers recovered an additional Rs 1.26 lakh in cash from his pocket,” a senior vigilance officer said.
The contractor, who has been executing various govt projects under the rural development department for several years, had approached the assistant engineer multiple times for approval of his pending bills. However, Das refused to process the payments unless he received Rs 1 lakh as bribe.
The contractor subsequently approached the vigilance authorities to report the harassment by Das. The vigilance team laid a trap and arrested Das in his office while he was accepting the bribe in the evening.
The vigilance department has initiated concurrent searches at the official’s properties across various locations in the city to investigate potential disproportionate assets (DA). Officials are reviewing his past decisions and file clearances to determine if he obtained any improper benefits during his tenure. Das would be produced in the vigilance court on Thursday.
