Art installations transform cityscape and celebrate cultural heritage
Bhubaneswar: In a bid to enhance the city’s visual appeal, Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) embarked on an ambitious mission to transform the state capital’s look through the strategic placement of art installations across various locations. These installations serve as both aesthetic landmarks and symbolic representations of the city’s rich heritage and progressive vision. The BMC put up 14 such installations in different parts of the city, which have become sights to admire by locals and visitors alike.
At Lingipur, a striking installation features Buddha’s bust alongside the iconic Dhauli Stupa. This installation not only beautifies the area but also serves as a stark reminder of the significant role Buddhism played in shaping the region’s spiritual and cultural landscape.
Near Utkal University, an impressive book sculpture was erected as a testament to the city’s commitment to the knowledge system. This artistic representation symbolises the pursuit of learning and intellectual growth, complementing its location near one of the state’s premier universities.
Similarly, near Rama Devi Women’s University, an art installation called ‘bright future’ features two individuals sitting on a bench – one holding a mobile tab while the other with a bunch of books, representing a fusion of modernity with the traditional value system.
At Acharya Vihar, a unique installation of a thinking head, ingeniously crafted from recycled scrap materials, represents the city’s embrace of innovation. This contemporary piece not only showcases creative recycling but also symbolises the fusion of traditional values with modern progress.
“We have a holistic approach to urban development, combining artistic expression with cultural preservation. The initiative has enhanced the city’s visual appeal and created new landmarks that tell the story of Bhubaneswar’s past, present and future,” city mayor Sulochana Das said.
“The locations are aptly chosen by the civic body. These are otherwise barren places which are now becoming sites to visit and admire. The city beautification drive that was recently taken up was really comprehensive,” Acharya Vihar resident Bikash Patra said.
