Art holds the power to question t holds the power to question society: Theatre artiste Savita | Bengaluru News

Ask Savita Rani, theatre director, and independent performer, about the role of theatre in effecting social change and she says, “We need art that’s not afraid to push boundaries, especially when we face political and social divides”. The director, who is bringing her solo performance Notion(s): In Between You & Me, this weekend to Bengaluru, reveals it to be a journey of exploring both the inner self and the external world. Excerpts:
‘AS A THEATRE ARTISTE, I HAVE OFTEN REFLECTED ON THE SUBTLETY OF POLITICS AND IDENTITY’
“I have often found myself thinking and reflecting on the subtlety of politics and identity as a theatre artist. For this play, particularly, the word ‘notion’ came from ‘nation’ as I wondered how borders – invisible and visible – shape one’s identity. I came across several writings that described borders as invisible lines, that trigger something within me. It made me reflect on something larger – beyond time. It is all belief systems that we internalise and use to judge others based on certain notions. This play is a journey through identity and self-awareness of those generational notions and traditions shaping our thoughts and identities,” says Savita.
As an independent artiste, there is a constant struggle for recognition and the battle to make space for art that isn’t driven by commerce. But that’s the very nature of being an artiste: we make a choice to engage with our art, despite the obstacles

‘IN THEATRE, THE SPACE BETWEEN THE PERFORMER AND THE AUDIENCE IS KEY’
“With each performance, I want to offer an exploration of life’s complex aspects. As the audience interacts with each performance, thoughts will stir. That is the real essence of this performance – the space between the performer and the audience, and the old versus new ideas. Art helps in shaping society and most often helps in making us question it as well,” she says.
‘TO OVERCOME WRITER’S BLOCK, ONE MUST ENGAGE WITH OTHERS’
“Over the years, I’ve learned that to overcome writer’s block, I need to engage with people. I often find my voice when I’m sharing my ideas with my friends, family, or other artistes. It helps me gain clarity and also gives a fresh perspective when others provide their input or feedback. It is essential as an artiste to embrace this process and let others help refine our work. Art, similar to life, is not an isolated experience – it is all about connection and exchange of ideas,” she says
