Army Major and Female Companion Assault Police Officer in Bhubaneswar Incident | Bhubaneswar News

Bhubaneswar: An Army Major and his female companion allegedly lost their cool and assaulted a lady police officer at Bharatpur police station here when the couple, who appeared to be intoxicated, was told to undergo a breathalyser test.
The incident took place around 3am on Sunday. The couple had gone to the police station to file a complaint against an unidentified motorist who had allegedly engaged in an altercation with them on the road.
But once at the station, things took a different turn when the on-duty lady sub-inspector suspected that the two were under the influence of alcohol, as two liquor bottles were discovered in their vehicle.
When the lady officer requested the couple to file a written complaint against the motorist, they started arguing. Sensing they could be drunk, the officer told them to undergo a breathalyser test.
“The couple refused to comply with the instruction and began to misbehave with the officer. The situation escalated as they physically pushed the lady officer and assaulted her. Our lady officer alleged that the woman bit her hand. Our investigation is in progress,” additional deputy commissioner of police (ADCP) Suresh Chandra Patra said.
As per Patra, the Major is posted in West Bengal. The police have contacted the Army regiment for verification.
Police said the Armyman was admitted to the hospital after he complained of illness. His female friend was subjected to a medical test. Police said a case would be registered against them for creating ruckus and misbehaving with the lady officer. Neither the Army officer nor her woman friend was available for comment.
Investigation into the circumstances that led to the confrontation is likely to hit the roadblock as the newly constructed Bharatpur police station does not have CCTV cameras. Former chief minister Naveen Patnaik had inaugurated the station on March 11. The station has been built over one acre of land at an estimated cost of Rs 4.50 crore.
