Apples: Retd officer cultivates apples in S’garh village | Bhubaneswar News

Rourkela: A retired sub-divisional officer (SDO) of the water resources department has cultivated apples in Rajgangpur block of Sundargarh district, proving the fruit can be grown in the area.
Biranchi Lakra (62) decided to settle in his native Buchukupada village and take up farming after retirement. Lakra decided to cultivate apples in his farmland and ordered online 70 saplings from Himachal Pradesh.In 2021, all the saplings were damaged, but Lakra didn’t lose hope.
After retiring in 2022, he ordered another 70 saplings from Himachal. Although 35 saplings were damaged due to heavy rain, Lakra focused on the remaining plants, which began bearing fruit in Dec 2023 and Jan this year. Sources said around 10 kg of apples have grown on 15 trees, with the remaining expected to bear fruit soon.
“I have planted another 250 apple saplings on my 1.5-acre land this time. I am confident a huge quantity of apples will grow on these trees,” he added.
Lakra said his wife Satyabhama supports him in cultivating the apples. Lakra has also successfully cultivated tomatoes and sold them. He employs six persons to work in his farm.
