Chennai: The Dec 11, 2024 robbery of a trader carrying Rs 20 lakh in cash got murkier with one more commercial tax officer being arrested by the Thousand Lights police on Tuesday. Already, police have arrested three income tax officers, two special sub-inspectors of police, and two commercial tax officers in connection with the robbery.
On Tuesday, police detained Janakiraman, a commercial tax officer, based on the statements of the arrested duo – Suresh T, 49, and T Babu, 43. He has been charged with colluding with the IT and police officials and in targeting traders carrying large sums of money.
Police said the commercial tax officers often played a mediator role with the traders, persuading them to give a portion of their cash as a bribe to avoid having any case registered against them for carrying large amounts of cash without valid receipts.
An investigation officer said: “We will formally inquire them in their custody to unearth their involvement in more incidents that went unreported in the city.”
Police said the IT inspector Damodharan, IT officer Pradeep, superintendent Prabhu, Chennai police SSI Raja Singh – attached to the law and order wing of the Triplicane police station – and an SSI Sunny Lloyd from Saidapet police, who were arrested in Dec 2024 based on a complaint by Mohammed Ghouse of Old Washermenpet in the Triplicane incident, were arrested again in the first week of Feb in connection with the Thousand Lights case.
