Berhampur: Police on Sunday arrested a 47-year-old trader from Andhra Pradesh for allegedly duping a rice miller of Pitatali in Ganjam district of Rs 77 lakh about five years ago.
The accused, identified as Indukuri Mahendra Verma of Tanuku in Andhra Pradesh’s West Godavari district, was arrested near Girisola along the Odisha-Andhra border, police said. “Acting on a tip-off, police conducted raids in the border area and arrested the accused,” said SP (Berhampur), Saravana Vivek M.
Police said two persons from Andhra Pradesh, including the accused, had approached the proprietor of a rice mill at Pitatali, a border village, about five years ago for the purchase of rice. They also assured the proprietor that they would procure rice from the mill regularly.
They also purchased rice for some days by paying promptly. Thereafter, they took rice worth over Rs 77.26 lakh from the mill on credit assuring the proprietor they will pay soon. Despite the mill owner’s repeated demands, they did not pay, police said after a preliminary inquiry.
Police said the accused had also assured to pay during a meeting with the miller in the presence of several people from both sides. Even after the stipulated date passed, the accused did not pay the money.
The proprietor lodged an FIR at Golanthara police station on Nov 6 last year against the accused. “We have seized all the documents related to supply of rice to the accused from time to time,” said Bibekanand Swain, inspector in-charge, Golanthara police station.
He said they have identified the second accused and a search was on to nab him.
