All you need to know about Central railway (CR) megablock in Mumbai | Mumbai News – Times of India
MUMBAI: The Central Railway (CR) has announced the cancellation of 930 local trains from Friday to Sunday to facilitate a 63-hour megablock for extensive maintenance and upgrades.
The project aims to extend platforms 10 and 11 at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) by 120 meters to accommodate 24-coach long-distance trains. This requires the relocation of rails, overhead wires, and other equipment.Additionally, platform 5 at Thane station will be widened from 10 meters to 13 meters to alleviate congestion.
These upgrades are part of a rapid construction project utilizing advanced modular platform construction techniques with pre-cast blocks, marking a first for Indian Railways.
The megablock will significantly impact the CSMT-Byculla main line and the CSMT-Wadala harbor line routes, causing disruptions for commuters. Additional blocks will be implemented at Thane on the Kalyan-bound fast line and the CSMT-bound slow line.
CR will also transition from a mechanical to an electronic interlocking system, with major civil and overhead equipment (OHE) upgrades completed, leaving only signaling upgrades pending.
To minimize the impact on commuters, CR has requested additional bus services from BEST in Mumbai, TMT in Thane, and MSRTC up to Kalyan. They have also appealed to transport unions to maximize the deployment of autos and taxis around station areas.
Furthermore, CR has asked Western Railway to avoid a megablock over the weekend and maintain maximum services. Traffic police will deploy more personnel to manage the expected increase in road traffic during this period.
