PURI: Odisha chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi, along with deputy chief ministers KV Singh Deo and Prabhati Parida, visited the ancient Jagannath Temple in Puri to offer prayers on Thursday.
The temple’s four gates, which had been closed since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, were reopened for devotees on this day.
In its first Cabinet meeting, Majhi’s newly sworn-in BJP government approved a proposal to reopen all four gates of the Shree Jagannath Temple early on Thursday morning and establish a corpus fund for its development.The temple visit was also attended by Puri MP Sambit Patra, Balasore MP Pratap Chandra Sarangi, and other party ministers and leaders.
Chief minister Majhi stated, “We had proposed to open all the four gates of Jagannath Temple in yesterday’s cabinet meeting. The proposal was passed and today at 6:30 am, I along with my MLAs and Puri MP (Sambit Patra) attended the ‘Mangala aarti’… For the development of the Jagannath Temple and for other works, we have proposed a fund in the cabinet. When we present the next state budget, we will allot a corpus fund of Rs 500 crore for the temple management.”
State minister Suryabanshi Suraj added, “During the elections, we had said that we would reopen all four gates… All four gates of the temple are going to be opened today. All members of the Council Ministers are present here. The CM is also present. A corpus fund worth Rs. 500 crore has also been announced for development projects. We took the oath yesterday and we are opening the gates today.”
The previous BJD government had kept the temple’s four gates closed since the COVID-19 pandemic began.
On Wednesday, Majhi was sworn in as the chief minister of Odisha’s first BJP government, with prime minister Narendra Modi in attendance. Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo and Pravati Parida were also sworn in as deputy chief ministers during the ceremony held at Janata Maidan in Bhubaneshwar, administered by Odisha governor Raghubar Das.
The event was attended by several prominent BJP leaders, including union home minister Amit Shah, union ministers Rajnath Singh, Ashwini Vaishnaw, and Nitin Gadkari, as well as chief ministers from various states such as Assam, Haryana, Uttarakhand, Gujarat, Chhattisgarh, Tripura, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh. Naveen Patnaik, the former BJD chief minister who served Odisha for 24 years, was also present on stage during the ceremony.
