Ajay Rai’s reign of crime ends in police encounter | Patna News – Times of India

Patna: Notorious criminal Ajay Rai, who was killed in an encounter by the special task force (STF) on Friday night, was the mastermind of the gang involved in bank robbery and other loot incidents in Patna, Bhojpur, Haryana, Saran and other places. Rai, who had been planning a major robbery in Patna, was cornered by the STF in the Sanjay Nagar locality under the Jakkanpur police station area of Patna.
An STF inspector sustained injuries during the crossfire and is currently undergoing treatment at a private hospital here. “He is out of danger,” said STF officials on Saturday.
STF officials added that Rai had been living in the area under a fake name, posing as an electrical contractor. “We received information that Rai was planning a major crime. The team reached Rai’s rented accommodation and asked him to surrender. However, he opened fire on the police,” an official said. Two other criminals who were present at the house managed to escape, but Rai was hit by four bullets in the exchange of fire. He was rushed to Nalanda Medical College and Hospital in critical condition, where he succumbed to his injuries.
Additional director general (ADG) of STF, Amrit Raj, said Rai had a long criminal history and was wanted in several cases of bank robbery and loot. “He frequently changed his hideouts to evade arrest. On December 9, he rented a room under the name Akash Yadav in the house of Savita Devi on Sanjay Nagar Road No. 10. He began living there with two other notorious criminals, Md Sahil and Vikas, on December 10,” the ADG said.
“He presented himself as an electrical contractor and even submitted a fake Aadhaar card to the landlady. We are searching for Sahil and Vikas,” Raj added.
The STF recovered a pistol, a cellphone, 8-10 live cartridges and other belongings from the spot. According to sources, Rai was associated with the infamous Chandan Sonar gang, known for kidnappings. He later formed his own gang three years ago and was linked to seven bank robberies in Saran and other districts as well as a robbery in Haryana.
“The STF had been pursuing Ajay for several months and his arrest was a priority,” said Raj.
