Airport Baggage Scan System: Airport Baggage Scan System Trial Completion in Two Weeks | Bhubaneswar News

Bhubaneswar: Trial run of the newly installed in-line baggage screening (ILBS) system at Biju Patnaik International Airport will be completed in two weeks. It will be commissioned after approval from Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS), airport officials said.
ILBS system ensures that one conveyer belt automatically scans baggage to examine if there are incriminating materials such as battery, improvised explosive device, inflammable materials that can cause damage to aircraft.“These sabotage materials cannot be carried in aircraft’s cargo section,” airport officials said.
The ILBS has a separate conveyer belt. “During initial trial, there were some hiccups. We brought some modifications. Now, it is on trial for two weeks. The BCAS will accord approval after examining its operation during the trial,” said airport director Prasanna Pradhan.
In ILBS, the baggage passes through high-end X-ray from check-in point to aircraft through conveyer belt. Officials said passengers need to walk up to the check-in counter to fetch boarding pass and register the luggage. “Once the luggage is registered, it is put on the belt that takes it through the scanners. In next two stages, the scanning machine provides 360-degree image (view) of the baggage and the input is sent to the central server for the security personnel to view it on a wide screen. They have 30 seconds to accept or reject the luggage based on suspicion,” an airport official said. If rejected, the bag goes on to be scanned at the third stage and goes into the aircraft if it is cleared. If rejected, the name of passenger is announced for a physical check. “This is a critical phase, where the scanning and reading has to be synchronised,” he said. It is an extremely smooth and hassle-free process.
