AI chatbot to answer queries on fire safety norms | Bhubaneswar News

Bhubaneswar: The state fire and emergency service directorate has decided to launch an artificial intelligence (AI)-based chatbot system to assist the public in understanding the guidelines and regulations concerning fire safety certifications for both residential and commercial structures.
“The automated system will enable people to receive instant responses to their enquiries through the chatbot interface,” director general (fire and emergency service), Sudhansu Sarangi, said.
The new digital initiative aims to provide instant guidance on fire safety certifications to applicants. The AI chatbot will serve as a 24/7 virtual assistant, offering real-time responses to public inquiries about fire safety regulations, certification requirements and compliance procedures. The automated system is designed to streamline the certification process and reduce the department’s response time to public queries.
“The technological advancement represents our focus to improving public service delivery. The AI chatbot will significantly reduce waiting times for basic information and allow our staff to focus on more complex safety matters,” another fire department official said.
As per the plan, the system will be accessible through the department’s website and mobile application, enabling users to receive immediate clarification on various aspects of fire safety requirements. The chatbot will be programmed with comprehensive information about building codes, safety standards and certification procedures.
DIG (fire and emergency service), Uma Shankar Dash, said the AI system will be trained on hundreds of frequently asked questions and will handle multiple inquiries simultaneously. “The chatbot will provide accurate, consistent information while maintaining a user-friendly interface. The initiative is part of our broader digital transformation strategy, which aims to enhance public safety through technological innovation. The system is likely to handle about 60% of routine inquiries, significantly reducing the workload on human operators,” Dash said.
Before its launch, the department plans to organise a public demonstration of the chatbot system. They will also collect user feedback during an initial trial period lasting several weeks. Additionally, the department plans to issue a user manual to assist the public in using the new system.
