Ahead of budget session, speaker tells oppn members to behave

Bhubaneswar: Assembly speaker Surama Padhy on Thursday warned opposition members of strict action if they indulge in any kind of indiscipline during the upcoming budget session, starting Feb 13. She, however, welcomed “constructive suggestions” from opposition legislators during the assembly session.
“While constructive suggestions from opposition members will be welcomed, disruptions or obstructions will not be tolerated. Strict action will be taken against members who will show any form of indiscipline behaviour during the session,” Padhy said.
She maintained that the opposition should play a constructive role and provide suggestions for the growth and development of the state during the session. Padhy said that if they create ruckus or obstruction, it will be considered as a breach of rules.
While the warning by the speaker has not gone down with the opposition leaders, they said they will raise the issues of the people and bring the mistakes of the govt to the forefront. An all-party meeting will be held before the beginning of the budget session.
“The whole of Odisha has seen what the BJP members did when they were in opposition. The speaker shouldn’t threaten us. We are not going to do what they did in the past, but if they threaten us like this, then we may retaliate,” said Pramila Mallik, the opposition chief whip in the assembly.
Congress legislature party leader Rama Chandra Kadam said the speaker should consider both ruling and opposition members as equal. “Opposition members know their role very well, and they will raise the issues and problems faced by the public and where the govt has failed in its duties,” Kadam said.
Defending Padhy, BJP MLA Saroj Padhi said, “There is a need for strict rules to discipline the opposition members. The way they offended the speaker during the previous session is not acceptable.”
The third session of the 17th assembly will begin Feb 13 and conclude on Apr 5. Chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi, who is also the finance minister, will table the budget on Feb 17.
