NEW DELHI: Mumbai-based Habitat Studio, already in the spotlight due to its role in the controversial ‘India’s Got Latent’ show, has now announced its closure following a recent incident of vandalism. The venue, which hosted stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra‘s performance, became the target of Shiv Sena workers’ anger after Kamra allegedly made derogatory remarks about deputy chief minister Eknath Shinde during his show.
The studio expressed its shock and distress in an Instagram post on Monday, stating, “We are shocked, worried and extremely broken by the recent acts of vandalism targeting us.” It further clarified that it is not responsible for the views expressed by the artists who perform at the venue, emphasizing that “artists are solely responsible for their views and creative choices.”
However, the studio acknowledged the challenges they have faced, revealing that the recent events made them rethink their position. The note continued, “We are shutting down till we figure out the best way to provide a platform for free expression without putting ourselves and our property in jeopardy.”
Earlier in the day, Habitat Studio issued an apology to “all those hurt by this video” and clarified that it was not involved in the creation of Kamra’s performance video and does not endorse his views. The studio’s involvement in previous controversies, such as hosting ‘India’s Got Latent,’ which sparked public outrage last month, has made it a frequent target of criticism.
The vandalism incident occurred on Sunday night when Shiv Sena supporters gathered outside Hotel Unicontinental, where Habitat Studio is located. The group allegedly damaged the studio and hotel property. In response, Mumbai Police filed an FIR against Kamra for allegedly making defamatory comments about Shinde during his show. They also registered a case against nearly 40 Shiv Sena workers involved in the destruction of the Khar-based venue.
While Shiv Sena leaders have expressed strong criticism of Kamra, others have come to his defense. Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut referred to Kamra’s remarks as “Kunal Ka Kamal.” Meanwhile, comedian and lyricist Varun Grover shared footage of the vandalism on social media, calling attention to the irony of such actions in a democratic society. Lawyer-activist Prashant Bhushan also condemned the vandalism, sharing the video with the caption: “Shinde Shiv Sena showing Modi how they face criticism even in jest!”
As the debate continues, Habitat Studio’s closure highlights the ongoing tension surrounding artistic freedom, political dissent, and the consequences of such controversies in India.
