Accused on the run for rape and murder, arrested from Dharavi after 21 years | Mumbai News – The Times of India

Mumbai: The MBVV cops on Tuesday arrested an accused who was on the run for the last 21 years, with only a photo in which the accused was 21 years younger than what he is today. The accused Sajid Ali Shaikh, now 56, was booked by the Virar cops on May 20 2004 under charges of rape and murder. He was living with the deceased who had a 20yr old daughter from her previous marriage and the accused had initiated sexual relations with her, due to which she was pregnant. The deceased did not approve this and a quarrel ensued during which Sajid Ali assaulted her. So brutal was the assault that the deceased died on the spot.
Sajid fled the spot and changed locations like Hyderabad, Gujarat as he worked as a truck driver, said Sameer Ahiirao from the crime branch unit II. We only had his photo in which he was 21 years younger and knew that he was a truck driver and had no other clue, so we went to Dharavi where he used to stay earlier, he added. This is where he used to stay before shifting to Virar with the deceased. So we started our search from Dharavi, added Ahirrao. There we came to know that a person resembling his description was seen at the leather market. Accordingly cops laid the trap and arrested him. He was produced in the court which remanded him to police custody for further investigation.
