Abu Salem’s Plea Against Transfer from Taloja Jail Rejected | Mumbai News – Times of India



MUMBAI: A special court on Tuesday rejected 1993 Bombay serial bomb blasts convict Abu Salem’s plea not to be transferred from Taloja jail. Salem had moved court expressing fears for his life and cited depression. Salem sought direction to Taloja central jail superintendent to not transfer him to another prison facility.
“The IG (Prison), Maharashtra state, Pune shall issue appropriate directions to the superintendent, central prison, Taloja to ensure safety and security of the accused Abu Salem… while shifting, transferring… the accused to central prison, Nashik,” the judge said.The judge also said that the IG should take periodical review of the safety of the accused and submit a review report once in four months. “Any inaction or lapses on the part of superintendents, central prison Taloja and central prison, Nashik Road ensuring safety and security of the accused will be dealt with strictly. ” the judge said.
After Salem’s lawyer moved a plea seeking time to file an appeal in the Bombay high court, the judge said that the order is not to be implemented until July 3.
Salem, who has been in jail since his extradition from Portugal 19 years ago, apprehended that as his release from the jail is near, a conspiracy is being planned to kill him by transferring him to other prions where there is a threat to his life. Salem also cited two previous attacks on him.
