Plaint against MLA, ex-MLA for ‘blocking’ coal transport by NLC

Bhubaneswar: Thelkoloi police station in Sambalpur district registered a case on Saturday against former Jharsuguda MLA Dipali Das and Rengali MLA Sudarshan Haripal for allegedly blocking the movement of NLC India Limited’s coal-transporting vehicles in Talabira on Friday.
The FIR, filed by NLC, named 13 others for leading an agitation involving around 500 people, who had 12 demands, including employment and a ban on illegal blasting of houses in the mining area.
Villagers from Patrapali and Malda panchayats in Jharsuguda district and Khinda panchayat in Sambalpur staged a dharna at the company’s entrance gate on Friday and stopped the movement of coal-transporting vehicles from 11 am to 10.30 pm.
Raghunath Behera, general manager of NLC India Limited in Talabira, said the blockade caused significant financial losses for the company and also affected govt revenue in terms of royalty.
Haripal told TOI, “I have no issue going to jail for raising the long-standing demands of the people who voted for me. As their MLA, my presence in a mass agitation is necessary.”
Dipali said, “On Sept 6 and 11, the villagers informed the district administration and NLC officials that if their demands were not met, they would stage a protest on Sept 20. As public representatives, we supported their efforts to achieve these demands.”
She added that it is unfortunate that cases are being filed against people fighting for the rights of the poor.
“NLC officials, with the support of the police, threatened the sarpanch, samiti members, and our people, saying they would be arrested if they didn’t comply. Let them file as many cases as they want against me,” said Dipali.
