BHUBANESWAR: Two students from city-based institutions have brought laurels to Odisha by winning a bronze medal and a medallion of excellence at the 47th WorldSkills competition, known as the Olympics of Skills. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi congratulated the duo.
Amaresh Kumar Sahu, a student of the Central Tool Room and Training Centre (CTTC) Bhubaneswar, won a bronze medal in the renewable energy category at the WorldSkills competition held in Lyon, France, from September 10 to September 15.Another student, Gedela Akhil from CV Raman Global University, received a Medallion for Excellence in the water technology category in the global event.

“The accomplishments of our skilled youth at the WorldSkills Competition are a source of immense pride for Odisha. Their success exemplifies the state’s commitment to nurturing young talent and developing skills that meet global standards,” said Majhi in his message.
He said Odisha’s continued journey towards becoming a leader in skill development is on the right track, and these victories will inspire countless others to aspire for excellence on a global platform.
Amaresh, a native of Deogarh district, is currently pursuing a diploma in mechatronics at the CTTC, while Akhil is pursuing his BTech in civil engineering at the private university.
“I feel happy that I won a medal for my country, especially for my state. I had won gold medals in Odisha Skills and India Skills before being selected for WorldSkills 2024. My institution CTTC has provided me with all the support to get training and other facilities,” said Amaresh.
Amaresh was mentored by SP Rollsan Rout, a master trainer at CTTC. “Rout’s guidance and mentorship were instrumental in preparing the student for the challenges of this international competition,” said L Rajasekhar, general manager of CTTC, Bhubaneswar.
Rajasekhar said Amaresh was undergoing expert training in wind energy in Vietnam to enhance his skills. “This specialised training bolstered Amaresh’s capabilities in the renewable energy sector, preparing him for even greater achievements in the future,” he added.
Rout said the selection process for WorldSkills is rigorous, with participants undergoing a three-tiered evaluation before representing India on the international stage. “He was trained in the installation of solar and wind energy along with its design, operation, and maintenance. The WorldSkills team had given several tasks on renewable energy, and Amaresh successfully completed the tasks and won the medal after four days of rigorous tests and evaluations,” he added.
The WorldSkills competition, the largest skills event in the world, brings together participants from over 80 countries to compete across various sectors, including manufacturing, technology, and services. The 47th edition saw 15 of the 60 participants representing India hailing from Odisha.
Like Amaresh’s foreign training, Akhil benefited from mentorship provided by a specialist from South Africa.
