Bhubaneswar: Safety and security of citizens residing in gated communities have been called into question once again following a shocking incident of burglary in a city apartment located in Chandaka area. The incident involved the alleged theft of over half a kilogram of gold items.
According to sources, the loot took place at a luxurious apartment under the jurisdiction of Chandaka police station in the house of Narayan Parida, a former chief scientist at National Metallurgical Laboratory. While Narayan and his wife were visiting their son in Europe, burglars seized the chance and carried out the heist on Sept 11 night. Caretaker of the house discovered the crime and reported the matter to the scientist on Sept 12 morning.
Parida, who had to cut short his European sojourn, arrived on Saturday and promptly filed a complaint with police. “We had intended to stay with our son for an additional month, but we were compelled to return hastily upon being informed about the burglary,” Parida said.
He said the perpetrators had specifically targeted gold items, leaving other valuables untouched. “They did not take any of my electronic gadgets. I have already lodged a formal complaint with police and hope that they will conduct a thorough investigation,” he added.
Parida’s wife, visibly distressed, revealed that most of the stolen gold ornaments held sentimental value, having been gifted by her mother and in-laws during their wedding. “It is not the monetary value that concerns us, but rather family value,” she said. Police have initiated their probe. “We have dispatched our dog squad and scientific team to the scientist’s residence. We are examining CCTV footage from neighbours,” said Pradip Kumar Jena, IIC, Chandaka police station.
